Rental scam

Renters are being warned to beware online scammers pretending to have properties for lease.

First National Real Estate says people posing as landlords are duping people into paying a deposit for keys to inspect a property.

First National chief executive Ray Ellis says the money is paid via a money transfer often overseas only for the prospective tenant to find the property doesn’t exist.

Ellis says people should always meet a landlord or property manager in person.
